Dungeon Preview: Cathedral of Eternal Night

Something sinister lurks in the upper chamber of Sargeras’ tomb. Once a peaceful place of worship, corruption has turned protector into poisoner, with Mephistroth at the helm - and the powerful dreadlord has one aim: to annihilate those who seek to return the Aegis of Aggramar to its resting place.

For Mephistroth, your attempt to infiltrate the Cathedral of Eternal Night is a deeply personal matter. The warlocks among you killed his favored general, Jagganoth, stringing up his corpse and heart in your Order Hall as both a warning and source of power. As for the rest of you, Mephistroth is seeking retribution for your recent brutal attacks on the Broken Shore. The memories are fresh. And revenge is sweet.

"We’re excited to add a new 5-player dungeon to complement the Broken Shore zone and - ultimately - the Tomb of Sargeras raid. Players’ ultimate purpose on the Broken Shore is the culmination of all their efforts thus far in Legion: Each of the five Pillars of Creation must be used in a particular place within the Tomb of Sargeras to halt the Legion’s invasion and save Azeroth - and the dungeon tells the first part of that story.

"While the raid delves deep into the foundations of the Tomb, revealing mysteries and varied horrors, this dungeon ascends the spire, focusing on the dark majesty of a tarnished monument to the glory of the goddess Elune. Entering atop a balcony overlooking the grand central hall of the Cathedral (a room that will later serve as the setting for the first boss encounter in the raid), players begin a climb that will take them past moonlit hanging gardens, towards the pinnacle of the tower where the Aegis must be placed. While the dungeon is, of course, rife with Legion presence, we deliberately focused the areas of fel contamination around the portions of the structure closest to the source of fel storm. This amplifies the contrast and allows us to showcase large sections of untarnished elven architecture."

Cathedral of Eternal Night will be available in Heroic, Mythic, and Mythic plus difficulties.

Encounters and Bosses

Agronox

This ancient served the night elf priestesses of the Temple of Elune, tending the beautiful Hanging Gardens. But after the malevolence of the Legion infected the Cathedral, the guardian absorbed fel energy through his roots. Now the twisted Agronox spreads corruption throughout the sanctuary he once protected, believing he has finally achieved his ideal state.

Overview

Agronox corrupts the garden he once tended and turns it against players. Quickly defeat his Lasher minions to avoid being overwhelmed. Run from Choking Vines before you are strangled. Poisonous Spores inflict increasing amounts of damage over time.

Thrashbite the Scornful

Smashspite’s detestable brother, Thrashbite, has been dispatched to wipe out the mortals entering the Cathedral’s grand library. The dimwitted mo’arg lacks any respect for knowledge or learning, feeling petty satisfaction as he crashes through ancient artifacts and tramples priceless tomes.

Overview

Thrashbite the Scornful favors imprecise, sweeping attacks with little regard for his surroundings. Trick him into going toe-to-toe with something thicker than himself, though, and he just might lose his balance. Beware: this ancient library contains many magical tomes with unpredictable enchantments!

Domatrax

With the Aegis of Aggramar socketed back into its cradle, Domatrax leads an onslaught of demons to destroy the relic.

Overview

Upon reaching 90% and 50% health, additional portals open up to allow greater numbers of the Legion’s soldiers to pour into the tomb. The Aegis of Aggramar provides protection against the Legion’s attacks, but if drained of all its energy, this aura will fall.

Mephistroth

Mephistroth orchestrates the Legion’s invasion from the Broken Shore. With the forces of Azeroth pushing against his front line, Mephistroth has fallen back to the Cathedral of Eternal Night, where he will employ all his cunning to ensure the heroes fail in securing the Aegis of Aggramar.

Overview

Mephistroth uses shadow magic to attack the party until he reaches 100% energy. Once his energy is full, Mephistroth fades away and strikes at the heroes from the shadows. During this, Illidan must be protected within the Aegis of Aggramar long enough for him to pull the dreadlord back into the light.

Prepared for battle?

You have scant time to prepare, heroes. We wish you luck as you return the Aegis and take on Mephistroth. For Azeroth!
